What Is a PNR (Booking Reference)?
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It's a unique alphanumeric code - usually five or six characters - generated by a reservation system the moment you book a flight. It links your booking details across every system that touches your trip: check-in, boarding, baggage handling, and any travel agent or online platform involved in the booking.
What information does a PNR contain?
- Passenger name(s) exactly as entered at booking
- Full itinerary - flight numbers, dates, and routing
- Ticket number(s) linked to the booking
- Contact details used for the reservation
- Fare class and seat assignment, if selected
- Any special requests, such as meals or assistance
Where do I find my PNR?
It's printed on your booking confirmation email, your e-ticket, and your boarding pass, usually labeled "booking reference," "confirmation code," or "record locator."
PNR vs ticket number: these are not the same thing
A PNR identifies the booking itself. A ticket number identifies the actual ticket issued against that booking. One PNR can contain several ticket numbers when multiple passengers are booked together, or when a single trip involves several airlines.
How to use your PNR
- Check in online through the airline's website or app
- Manage or change your booking
- Look up your flight status
- Reference your trip when contacting customer support or requesting a refund
